Andy Roddick Questions Novak Djokovic's Body for 2026 Grand Slams - Can He Still Compete? (2026)

Can Novak Djokovic conquer Father Time? That's the burning question former tennis star Andy Roddick poses as we look ahead to the 2026 Grand Slam season. It's not about skill or strategy; it's about the relentless demands a 38-year-old body faces in the grueling best-of-five-set format.

Djokovic, at 38 years old, showcased remarkable consistency this year, reaching the semifinals of all four Grand Slams. He even managed to defeat Carlos Alcaraz in Australia, but the victory came at a cost: a hamstring injury that forced him to retire against Alexander Zverev in the semifinal. In the subsequent three Grand Slams, he faced setbacks, losing twice to Jannik Sinner and once to Alcaraz. The Serb didn't win a single set in his last three Slam defeats.

After his US Open semifinal loss to Alcaraz, Djokovic himself admitted the physical toll of competing with Alcaraz and Sinner in the longer format. Yet, he affirmed his commitment to return in 2026 with the same ambition.

Roddick's central point is clear: Djokovic's chances in 2026 hinge on his physical condition. Can his body endure the seven demanding matches required to win a Grand Slam?

"The question is... And he was questioning this after the US Open. I don’t know that he can train the way he used to. I would suspect that you can’t train that psychotically, and I mean that in a good way, at 38 years old," Roddick explained on his podcast. "And if you can’t do that, can you get your body to hold up over the course of two weeks at a major, over best-of-five? The answer this year was no. To his own admission."

And this is the part most people miss... "It was like I don’t know if my body can do it, and when I get to the semis am I going to beat these guys if my body is damaged goods by the time I get there? That is the whole thing for this conversation.”

Djokovic will be 39 during the French Open next year.

But here's where it gets controversial... While Roddick focuses on physical limitations, could Djokovic's experience and mental fortitude still give him an edge? Do you think Djokovic can overcome the physical challenges and compete at the highest level? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
