The historic Rhondda railway tunnel, which has been closed for almost six decades, is set to undergo a remarkable transformation. This 3.1-kilometer tunnel, connecting Blaengwynfi in the Afan valley to Blaencwm in the Rhondda valley, has a rich history. It was once a vital link for transporting coal to Swansea Bay, but safety concerns led to its closure in 1968.

But here's where it gets controversial... The Rhondda Tunnel Society, with the support of local councils and politicians, is determined to bring this tunnel back to life. They've been granted permission to excavate the buried entrance at Blaencwm, which will facilitate easier access for much-needed maintenance and inspection work.

The society's long-term vision is not just about the tunnel. They plan to create a stunning country park by moving the excavated spoil to the nearby Glenrhondda Colliery site, bordering the beautiful Afan Forest Park.

"This is a significant step forward," says Stephen Mackey, chairman of the Rhondda Tunnel Society. "We can now begin the crucial maintenance work to prepare the tunnel for its new purpose."

The Rhondda tunnel has a fascinating past. It opened in 1890, but severe distortion caused by mining led to its initial closure. The train stations at either end also met their demise, replaced by a bus service until 1970. Plans to reopen the tunnel were shelved, leaving it abandoned for decades.

Both ends of the tunnel have been covered since 1980, and it's currently owned by Highways England. However, the Rhondda Tunnel Society, in partnership with Railway Paths, aims to take ownership, breathing new life into this forgotten gem.

If this project gets the green light, it will become the longest cycle tunnel in Europe and the second longest in the world. Economic analyses estimate a significant impact, with potential benefits of up to £14 million over 30 years.

The project has gained widespread support, including from celebrities like Michael Sheen and Martin Roberts. In 2021, there was talk of ownership transfer, but no official change has been made yet.

Despite the progress, the National Highways website describes the project as still in its early stages, awaiting authorization from the Welsh Parliament for the transfer of ownership. Once that's approved, the Rhondda Tunnel Society and Railway Paths will seek funding for construction, estimated to take 18 months.
