A Sleek Upgrade: My Journey in AA's Flagship Business Class
I recently had the pleasure of flying on the brand new American Airlines A321XLR, a state-of-the-art aircraft, from Los Angeles to New York. This journey offered me a glimpse into the future of air travel, and I must say, it left a lasting impression.
The Journey Begins: LAX to JFK
My adventure started with an early morning departure from LAX, a quiet and peaceful airport at that hour. I treated myself to a coffee in the Flagship Lounge before boarding, setting the tone for a luxurious experience.
Boarding commenced 40 minutes prior to takeoff, and as I stepped onboard, I was greeted by a modern, stylish cabin with subtle mood lighting. The interior design immediately evoked a sense of familiarity, reminiscent of JetBlue's renowned comfort.
The Cabin: A Private Haven
The A321XLR's business class cabin boasts an intimate layout with just 20 seats, arranged in a 1-1 configuration across 10 rows. I settled into seat 1F, a narrow yet surprisingly comfortable and private space. The padding was excellent, providing ample room for my feet, and the suite finishes added a touch of elegance.
One of the highlights was the easily accessible power outlet and USB-C port, ensuring I could stay connected throughout the flight. The round AA "marble" coaster, an artistic touch, added a unique and well-executed accent to the overall design.
Pros and Cons: A Balanced Perspective
While the seat offered a great deal of privacy, there were a few drawbacks. The aisle in business class is quite narrow, making it a tight squeeze when walking down the cabin. Additionally, the seating arrangement places passengers with their backs to the window, requiring an awkward turn to enjoy the view.
However, I didn't encounter the issue of the monitor hindering service. The flight attendant seamlessly moved it aside when serving my breakfast, a minor inconvenience that didn't detract from the overall experience.
Dining Delights: A Culinary Journey
The culinary offerings on this flight were a real treat. I opted for the "American Breakfast," a delicious spread featuring scrambled eggs, bacon, roasted potatoes, and herbed tomato. It was accompanied by a side of fruit and a choice of croissant, cinnamon roll, or biscuit.
For coffee enthusiasts, the new A321XLRs offer an espresso machine, and I indulged in a delightful espresso macchiato to complement my breakfast.
Mid-flight, passengers were offered a cheese plate and a snack basket, ensuring no one went hungry. Prior to landing, AA's signature hot chocolate chip cookie was served, a sweet conclusion to the meal service.
Work and Play: In-Flight Entertainment and Productivity
This flight was a productive one for me, as I spent most of the journey working on my laptop. The internet, provided by Viasat, performed exceptionally well, allowing me to accomplish a significant amount of work during the 4.5-hour journey.
The in-flight entertainment system, a much-needed refresh for A321T travelers, offered a nice selection of films and television shows. However, a minor setback occurred when the Bang & Olufsen headphones malfunctioned. American Airlines should ensure these premium headphones are in working order to provide the best experience.
Rest and Relaxation: The Lie-Flat Bed
I took a moment to test the lie-flat bed position, and it proved to be a comfortable and spacious option for my 6'1" frame. The bedding, provided by Re-Thread by John Horsfall, included a duvet and pillow, ensuring a good night's sleep on overnight flights.
Exceptional Service: A Dedicated Crew
The crew on this flight was exceptional, led by Cathleen, who also served as the purser on my Doha-New York flight during the pandemic. The A321XLR has six flight attendants, and the team, including Ileana, Toni, Ellen, and Joanna, provided exceptional service with a friendly and kind demeanor. I even had a delightful chat with them in the rear galley.
Conclusion: A Preferred Choice
In summary, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience on the A321XLR. While there were a few minor drawbacks, the overall design, privacy, and efficiency of the cabin layout made it a preferred choice over the 2-2 B/E Diamond seating on the AA321T.
Stay tuned for my full review, where I'll delve into more details about the flight, including the lavatories and amenity kit, accompanied by a wealth of pictures.
