But hereâs where it gets even more exciting: the lineup includes appearances by NHL legends, local heroes, and even a chance to lace up your skates alongside the pros. And this is the part most people missâitâs not just about the games; itâs about community, inspiration, and a love for the sport that transcends generations.
The mastermind behind this icy takeover? Sheri Wabie, Mattawaâs Parks and Recreation Supervisor, who dreamed up the idea this fall and has been working tirelessly to make it a reality. âMy goal was to pack January with as many hockey-focused events as humanly possible,â Wabie explained. And boy, has she delivered. From public skates with OHL stars to a thrilling alumni game featuring former NHL greats, thereâs something for every hockey enthusiast.
Kicking things off on January 10, members of the North Bay Battalion OHL team will hit the ice for a free public skate. Fans are encouraged to join the players for a spin around the rink, snap photos, and snag autographs. The event runs from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Mike Rodden Arenaâmark your calendars!
But the real showstopper? On January 17, The Legends Tour NHL Alumni rolls into town, bringing hockey royalty like Ron and Rich Sutter, Brian Sutherby, John LeBlanc, and Bernie Nicholls. These veterans will face off against a team of local Mattawa stars, including Brody Belanger and Eric Boule, in a game you wonât want to miss.
