But now, there's a glimmer of hope. Former President Donald Trump has stated that he's been assured that the killing of protesters in Iran has ceased, with executions also reportedly off the table. This announcement has brought a sigh of relief, but the situation remains complex.
Trump's statements followed days of him expressing support for the Iranian people amidst a crackdown on protests. Human rights groups estimate that the unrest has led to at least 3,428 deaths and over 10,000 arrests.
In a surprising move, Trump revealed he received assurances from "very important sources" that Tehran had stopped using lethal force against protesters and would not carry out executions. He added, "They’ve said the killing has stopped and the executions won’t take place – there were supposed to be a lot of executions today and that the executions won’t take place – and we’re going to find out.” However, he offered no specific details and acknowledged that the US had yet to verify these claims.
When asked if US military action was now off the table, Trump responded cautiously, saying, "We’re going to watch it and see what the process is."
Adding to the cautious optimism, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Fox News that Iran had "no plan" to execute people in retaliation for the anti-government protests. He stated that "Hanging is out of the question." The execution of Erfan Soltani, the first Iranian protester sentenced to death, has been postponed.
But here's where it gets controversial... These developments come after a period of heightened tension. Iran closed its airspace to almost all flights, and airlines rerouted flights to avoid Iranian and Iraqi airspace. Some US military personnel in Qatar were advised to evacuate, and the US embassies in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia urged caution. A senior Iranian official warned regional countries hosting US bases that they would be targeted in the event of a US strike.
And this is the part most people miss... The UK temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran, and other countries urged their citizens to leave. However, Iran's airspace reopened, and Araghchi appealed for diplomacy, stating, "Between war and diplomacy, diplomacy is a better way."
These developments led to a sharp drop in oil prices, gold, and silver. Trump also expressed uncertainty about exiled opposition figure Reza Pahlavi's ability to garner support within Iran.
The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet, and G7 foreign ministers are prepared to impose additional measures on Iran.
