The Kenya Navy recently hosted an intense two-day Inter-Units Taekwondo Championship, showcasing the prowess of its martial artists. From November 26-27, 2025, at the Kenya Navy Base (KNB) Mtongwe in Mombasa County, the event was a thrilling display of discipline, strength, and unity. The championship was officially opened by Brigadier William Kiprotich and concluded by Colonel Lopeyok Epetet, both members of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
This competition brought together talented taekwondo practitioners from various Kenya Navy units, all vying for a spot on the elite team that will represent the service in the prestigious Bora Cup Championship in March 2026. It was a true testament to the Navy's commitment to fostering physical readiness and mental resilience among its personnel.
Brigadier Kiprotich emphasized the importance of sports as a vital component of military training, stating, 'Today's gathering is more than just a sporting event. It's a demonstration of the discipline, strength, and unity that define the Kenya Navy. Taekwondo teaches us far more than physical combat. It instills values like focus, self-control, and respect, which are essential for our service as sailors.'
He encouraged all participants to strive for excellence, foster camaraderie, and uphold the spirit of teamwork. Colonel Epetet, in his closing remarks, praised the winners for their outstanding performance and competitive spirit, highlighting the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect that were on full display.
The championship served a dual purpose: identifying and nurturing promising taekwondo talent within the Navy and enhancing combat-fitness levels. The competition featured various categories, including Poomsae (patterns), Kyorugi (sparring), and specialized demonstrations, where precision, discipline, controlled power, and tactical awareness were showcased.
