Malaysia's Aging Population: What the Future Holds (2026)

Get ready for a demographic revolution in Malaysia! The median age of Malaysians is projected to skyrocket, reaching a whopping 40.7 years by 2060. This dramatic shift is highlighted in the United Nations' report, "World Population Prospects: The 2024 Revision."

But here's where it gets controversial: Malaysia is aging faster than some of its ASEAN neighbors, like Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Yet, it's not alone in this journey.

Median age, a crucial indicator, reflects the balance between life expectancy and birth rates. As it rises, it signifies a population's gradual transition towards an older demographic.

Singapore, for instance, is set for a massive leap, with its median age expected to surge by 21.6 years, reaching 56.1 by 2060. Meanwhile, the Philippines, despite being one of ASEAN's youngest nations, is predicted to have the second-highest increase in median age.

And this is the part most people miss: even though Malaysia's median age is rising, its overall dependency ratio - the number of children and older persons per 100 working-age adults - is expected to increase modestly from 44.3 in 2020 to 52.3 in 2060.

In contrast, countries like Singapore, Thailand, China, and South Korea are facing much steeper increases in their dependency ratios, largely due to shrinking workforces and rapidly aging populations.

Malaysia is also one of the few countries in the region that is still expected to grow in population size. It will reach its peak population of 42.4 million in 2059, long after Thailand and China have experienced population decline.

Peak population, as the name suggests, is the point at which a country's population reaches its maximum size. After this peak, the population typically starts to decline as low fertility rates and an aging population outpace births.

Japan, South Korea, China, and Thailand have already reached their population peaks before 2030. Interestingly, the populations of the United States, Australia, and India are projected to continue growing beyond 2060, with the world's population estimated to reach 9.99 billion by then.

So, what does this mean for Malaysia and its future? With an aging population and a modest dependency ratio increase, how will the country navigate these demographic changes?
