Max Verstappen takes the lead! Red Bull's star driver, Max Verstappen, dominated the opening morning session, setting the fastest time of 1m35.433s. But here's the twist: with the new technical regulations in place, this time is significantly slower compared to Oscar Piastri's pole position in 2025. The gap? A whopping five and a half seconds!
And the battle for the top spot was intense. Piastri, driving for McLaren, came in a close second, just a fraction of a second behind Verstappen. Meanwhile, George Russell of Mercedes secured third place, followed by the legendary Lewis Hamilton, who was exactly one second off Verstappen's pace.
But here's where it gets controversial... Hamilton, now driving for Ferrari, had a harmless spin in Turn 1. Could this be a sign of things to come for the iconic driver?
Esteban Ocon of Haas rounded off the top five, while teams focused more on covering ground rather than performance. This explains the large gaps between cars, as they fine-tune their strategies for the upcoming season.
Sixth and seventh places went to Arvid Lindblad and Carlos Sainz, who put in impressive laps for Racing Bulls and Williams, respectively. Williams, in particular, is making a strong comeback after missing the Barcelona shakedown due to production delays.
Gabriel Bortoleto, driving a revamped Audi R26 with radical new sidepods, took eighth position. And the liveries of the cars are definitely turning heads, with Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas and Aston Martin's Lance Stroll also making their mark on the track.
However, it wasn't all smooth sailing. Alpine's A526 caused a red flag when Franco Colapinto stopped on track, ending up in 11th place with the lowest lap count.
