Norman Powell: Beyond the Court - Understand the Grind Foundation & Community Impact (2026)

Norman Powell: Behind the Scenes of a Philanthropic Journey

Norman Powell is not just a professional basketball player; he’s a dedicated individual making a significant impact off the court. When he’s not busy perfecting his jump shot in the gym, you can often find him making calls to spread joy during the holiday season.

Currently, Powell is enjoying a stellar season with the Miami Heat, averaging an impressive 24.6 points per game, while also serving as the driving force behind his charitable organization, the Understand the Grind Foundation, which operates in his hometown of San Diego.

This foundation, supported by generous donations and local food suppliers, successfully distributed 500 turkeys to families in need this past Thanksgiving. As the holiday season approaches, they are preparing for a Christmas gift drive scheduled for December 18. Although Powell will be occupied with a game against the Nets in Brooklyn on that day, his mother, Sharon Powell, along with his sisters, Margaret Powell-Smart and Joniece Benjamin, and a close-knit group of friends, will manage the event.

This arrangement is particularly meaningful to Powell, as he emphasizes the family-oriented nature of his foundation. He credits his mother as a major influence in his philanthropic efforts, stating, "She was a big advocate in giving back to the community, helping the next family, somebody else in need. Watching her as a kid rubbed off on me. I always thought that if I made it to the NBA, I’d never forget where I came from and would always try to give back and help the next generation pursue their dreams."

The upcoming Christmas event has been a cherished tradition for about eight years. Powell explains that his mother receives referrals from community members, coaches, and teachers regarding families in need. The foundation then provides these families with gift cards or shopping experiences, allowing them to select gifts for their loved ones.

Having been selected as the 46th pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, Powell began his professional career with the Toronto Raptors, where he celebrated an NBA championship in the 2018-19 season. He has also played crucial roles in playoff teams with the Portland Trail Blazers and the LA Clippers. Recently, he was traded to the Heat, where he has excelled, leading the team in scoring and averaging 3.1 three-pointers per game.

Powell’s personal mantra, "Understand the Grind," emerged from discussions with childhood friends about the challenges faced by aspiring NBA players from southeast San Diego. He recalls, "One of my friends said, ‘A lot of people don’t understand the grind and what it takes to be successful and the choices you have to make.’ This resonated with us and became a guiding principle during tough times. We leaned on it as part of our journey to success."

Over time, "Understand the Grind" has evolved into more than just a philosophy; it has transformed into a lifestyle brand. Powell began creating shirts during his rookie season, which eventually led to a clothing line. This initiative later expanded into his charitable foundation, which now provides year-round mentorship, educational support, and an annual youth basketball camp. Additionally, he launched the Grind Media Group this year.

Powell believes that the message behind his brand transcends sports, resonating with individuals at various stages of their lives and careers. He states, "Everyone has their own grind. Everyone is striving for success in their chosen field, and hard work is essential. While some may have advantages, most people must start from the ground up in their respective fields. You need to sacrifice, outwork others, and be prepared to seize opportunities with confidence, knowing you’ve put in the effort to reach your goals."

The UTG Scholars Program is designed for young student-athletes, connecting them with successful community members across various professions. This program allows them to shadow professionals, and as they approach college, they can earn scholarships, sponsorships, and other forms of support. Powell explains, "This could involve helping with dorm supplies, funding their education, or assisting with their move-in process. My mom has even driven to different colleges to help students who received scholarships set up their new lives. We aim to broaden their horizons and show them that success is attainable beyond their immediate community."

Powell’s philanthropic efforts extend beyond the United States. Last summer, he sought to reconnect with his roots on his father’s side and expressed a desire to play for the Jamaican National Team as they aim to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games. After Hurricane Melissa devastated the island in October, Powell stepped up as the captain of the national team during a critical time for reconstruction. He generously donated $100,000 from his foundation to aid Jamaica and organized a clothing and canned goods drive through the Understand the Grind Foundation.

Currently, Powell’s foundation is preparing another relief shipment for the people of Jamaica. He emphasizes his commitment to helping, stating, "I’m not just someone who talks about making a difference; I truly dedicate myself to it. The people of Jamaica are facing significant challenges due to the hurricane, and I’m also checking in on my teammates’ families to ensure they are okay. I’m doing everything I can to provide relief."
