On Sunday, the Flames sent Rasmus Andersson to the Golden Knights in exchange for defenseman Zach Whitecloud, prospect Abram Wiebe, a conditional first-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, and a conditional second-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft.
Andersson was a key player for the Flames, ranking third on the team with 30 points (comprising 10 goals and 20 assists) in 48 games this season. He also led the team in time on ice per game, averaging 24:14, and was second in blocks with 90.
"In deals like this when you have a player of Rasmus' caliber, it really has to have a first-round pick in it," said Flames general manager Craig Conroy, highlighting the importance of the trade's compensation. The Flames' general manager also mentioned the conditional picks, which could become even more valuable depending on the Golden Knights' success. If Vegas wins the Stanley Cup, the Flames could receive another first-round pick in 2028.
Andersson is currently in the final year of a six-year, $27.3 million contract ($4.55 million average annual value) he signed with the Flames on January 8, 2020, and is set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season. Calgary will retain 50 percent of his salary in this trade.
Conroy also noted that the deal's negotiation changed in the last 12 hours, as it became clear that no extension would be signed with any team. This impacted the negotiation and the return Calgary received.
Andersson, drafted by Calgary in the second round (No. 53) of the 2015 NHL Draft, has a solid track record, with 261 points (including 57 goals and 204 assists) in 584 regular-season games. He drives possession, he can make plays, he’s good in transition, and he’s aggressive in the offensive zone. He’s played a lot for the Flames. He’s played a lot of hard minutes for their team. Whitecloud, who was signed by the Golden Knights as an undrafted free agent on March 8, 2018, has 78 points (with 23 goals and 55 assists) in 368 regular-season games. He also has 17 points (with 5 goals and 12 assists) in 78 playoff games, including winning the Stanley Cup in 2023.
Conroy praised Whitecloud, saying, "Another Stanley Cup champion... He’s going to bring that ability to come in here and help, especially on the penalty kill. He’s going to eat up a lot of minutes for us."
Abram Wiebe, a 22-year-old defenseman, was selected by Vegas in the seventh round (No. 209) of the 2022 NHL Draft. He has 14 points (with 3 goals and 11 assists) in 24 games as a junior at the University of North Dakota this season.
The Golden Knights (with a record of 24-11-12) are currently leading the Pacific Division and are on a seven-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the Flames (with a record of 21-23-4) are seventh in the Pacific and 13th in the Western Conference.
