Vale Ray Benson: A Legend in Australian Racing
The racing world mourns the loss of a true legend, Ray Benson, who passed away at the age of 84, losing his battle with cancer late on Saturday night. Benson's career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on Australian racing.
His journey began in 1957 when he called his first race at Sale, marking the start of a golden era for Australian race callers. Benson's talent was soon recognized, and he joined 3TR in Gippsland, broadcasting races for three years. His move to 3UZ (now RSN) brought him together with renowned commentators Bert Bryant and John Russell, further solidifying his reputation.
In 1972, Benson's career took a significant turn when he joined 3DB as their number two caller, working alongside the legendary Bill Collins. This move had a profound impact on the industry, as it paved the way for young caller Bryan Martin to join 3UZ, the station he would eventually become the number one caller for.
Martin, reflecting on Benson's legacy, praised his diligence and attention to detail. "Ray was a meticulous form student," Martin said. "He had an exceptional eye for detail, studying replays and assessing form, which allowed him to read a race with remarkable accuracy. Despite his no-nonsense approach, he was precise, clear, and passionate about the game."
Benson's versatility was evident as he excelled in all three codes of racing. He was a regular behind the microphone for harness racing at the Showgrounds and Moonee Valley, as well as greyhound racing from Olympic Park. His prowess as a tipster and his phrase, 'it will keep,' earned him the nickname 'The Preserver,' a testament to his ability to identify strong contenders.
Even after his calling career ended in the 1980s, Benson remained deeply involved in the racing world. He took on a role with Sky Channel as a mounting yard analyst and was a familiar face at Melbourne races on Saturdays. Dressed impeccably and arriving early, he would spend the day in the broadcast boxes, sharing tea, jokes, and insights with fellow commentators.
Martin recalled Benson's dry sense of humor and his enjoyment of the lighter side of racing. "Ray had a great sense of humor," Martin said. "He loved to have a bit of fun, especially between races. We built a strong camaraderie, and he was always there, sharing a cup of tea and a joke with us."
The racing community has lost a true icon, but Benson's legacy will live on through the memories of those he inspired and the impact he had on the sport. His dedication, precision, and passion for racing will forever be remembered and celebrated.
