Get ready for a green upgrade! The Villages' golf enthusiasts are in for a treat, but it comes with a hefty price tag. The Amenity Authority Committee has voted to invest a whopping $272,462 in transforming the greens at two of the community's most historic executive golf courses.
But here's the catch: the turf variety is being switched up. The Hilltop and Silver Lake Executive Golf Courses, both located on the Historic Side, will bid farewell to their TifGrand Bermuda Turf. This decision follows a shift in philosophy regarding the ideal turf for these courses, influenced by resident and course superintendent feedback, and the appointment of a new Executive Golf Maintenance Director, Donald Jones.
And this is where it gets interesting: TifGrand, despite its shade tolerance, is now considered more suitable for fairways and lawns. Enter TifEagle, the turf of choice for Florida's golf course greens. According to Jones, TifEagle boasts superior putting quality, a finer texture, and exceptional performance under intense management. It's the go-to for all executive and championship course green renovations.
Developed specifically for putting greens, TifEagle is a Bermuda grass marvel. Its third-generation ultradwarf characteristics include tighter density and finer leaf blades, ensuring a smooth and consistent ball roll. It's no wonder TifEagle is a favorite among club players and for tournament conditions, requiring frequent mowing, verticutting, and topdressing.
Since its debut in the 1990s, TifEagle has become a Florida favorite, even gracing PGA West renovations. However, not everyone is on board with the change.
