Umar Nurmagomedov is facing criticism for allegedly dodging a rising star in the UFC bantamweight division, who claims that Nurmagomedov is avoiding him.
Despite his recent successes, Nurmagomedov has yet to secure another opportunity to challenge for the UFC Bantamweight Championship. Notably, all of his last five bouts have concluded with decision victories, and he hasn’t achieved a finish since early 2023. This trend is particularly concerning because the UFC has recently shown a preference for fighters who can deliver exciting finishes and captivating performances. Nurmagomedov may need to reassess his approach if he hopes to contend for the bantamweight title again.
Vinicius Oliveira, an up-and-coming bantamweight fighter, expressed his skepticism regarding Nurmagomedov’s ability to engage and entertain fans during a media session at UFC Vegas 113. He criticized Nurmagomedov’s fighting style, labeling it as unexciting. "He’s a boring fighter," Oliveira remarked. "He executed his usual tactics effectively on the ground, but his striking skills are lacking. I believe I’m on a path to face him in the future, but his latest performance didn’t impress me at all."
Further igniting the conversation, Oliveira boldly asserted that the highly-ranked Nurmagomedov is intentionally avoiding a matchup against him. "I think the fight between me and Umar likely won’t happen because he’s afraid of me," Oliveira claimed. "He’s running away from me as if a demon were fleeing from a curse. But maybe one day, I will get to fight Sean O’Malley instead."
Oliveira is preparing for a significant challenge against Mario Bautista in the main event of UFC Vegas 113 this Saturday. A victory in this fight could elevate Oliveira’s standing as a serious contender for the bantamweight title. Known as "Lok Dog," he is currently on a six-fight winning streak, with his last defeat occurring in July 2022 at “UAE Warriors 30.” Throughout his current run, Oliveira has taken down notable opponents such as Kyler Phillips, Said Nurmagomedov, and Ricky Simon.
