Porsche AG is introducing its most powerful 911 factory model to date by leveraging its internal combustion strength within a hybrid Turbo S variant. The new model surpasses its predecessor with 711 horsepower, earning it the label of the most powerful series-production 911 ever built, according to the company. Unveiled at the Munich auto show in September, the car will start at €271,000 (approximately $318,000), with European deliveries slated for later this year.
This launch comes at a challenging time for the Volkswagen AG family brand. Since its blockbuster stock market debut in Frankfurt three years ago, the share price has shed about half its value amid supply chain issues, softer demand for electric models, and a decline in sales in its crucial market, China. Potentially harsher pricing pressures from U.S. tariffs could further reduce profits in what has become the company’s largest market. The stock’s slide has been so severe that Porsche is exiting Germany’s DAX index.
Following leadership changes within the company, Porsche has been pursuing a path of cost reduction—partly through layoffs—and expanding its lineup with more combustion-engine and plug-in hybrid models. The firm also abandoned a previously planned in-house battery production initiative due to weak demand for electric vehicles.
In a statement to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Chief Executive Officer Oliver Blume described the new direction as a clear step toward rejoining the DAX as soon as possible. He also oversees Volkswagen, a dual role he has held since 2022. The Porsche-Piëch owner family is reportedly exploring succession options as they consider a candidate to focus exclusively on Porsche.
The Turbo S marks the latest milestone in Porsche’s T-Hybrid technology journey, which first appeared in the 911 Carrera GTS last year. Engineers replaced a traditional turbocharger—driven by exhaust gases—with an electric turbocharger integrated with an electric motor. This configuration enables torque to build more rapidly, enhancing both power and the efficiency of the combustion process.
The Turbo S hybrid expands upon this approach by employing two electric turbochargers alongside a 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine. The outcome is a notably swift vehicle even by Porsche standards, with the 911 Turbo S accelerating from 0 to 200 kilometers per hour (0 to 124 mph) in 8.4 seconds, 0.5 seconds faster than the previous model.
